You can now use this at the end of any OpenEdit URL:

?oedebug=true

You can also use this:

?oemaxlevel=2

A level is the count from the content page all the way to the outer layout.

Or you can combine them

The only thing I might add is not use a database. A database causes pages to not be cached at the browsers. Having a database also forces another loop back to the database for each request.
