Building an OpenEdit pluginHey All! Chris Burkey and I were sitting at CINJUG, the cincinnati Java users group just prior to the last Users group meeting and watching a presentation on Wicket. That presentation was part of where the OpenEdit framework was born - we sat down afterwards and said to ourselves - wow, we can do this better. We already do. The presentation was excellent, to be fair. I really enjoyed it and as a developer I look for ideas everywhere - and the idea of components (a la swing) being a valuable addition to a framework was not lost on me (More to come on this....) The presentation was on how to build a mini membership (this example was a karate club) management application in Wicket - and the claim to fame was that it had been done in 8 hours (pushing to 3 am in good coder style). So Chris and I ended up discussing how we would do the same in 8 hours - we had a lot of ideas. In the end though, I did sit down for 8 hours and I did develop something. It's not a Karate club management system because at the end of the day, I thought I'd rather build something that I actually needed and that would benefit the framework as a whole. What I realized as I completed the task was that I'd used almost every key technology that the OEF can bring to the table - Multiple fallback for pages, application level extension/inheritance (this is a really cool concept), AJAX integration, etc. So, based on that, I'm going to put together a tutorial that I hope encompasses the core principles of the OEF as well as the steps to put together a plugin. They'll go out in the IJ Solutions (http://www.ijsolutions.ca/) newsletter probably about once a week as I find the time to put together the various steps. I'll also make an announcement on there as to what the plugin is and what it brings to OpenEdit within the next few days - I want to put it up on our build servers and add it to the plugin manager so that people can play with it themselves. Once I've got the whole thing completed I'll put it up here as well as on our website. Have a great weekend, fellow coders. Posted by Ian Miller Sat, Jun 21 2008 5:12 PM
